Northern Maine Community College is a community college in Presque Isle, Maine and one of the seven colleges in the Maine Community College System. The 87-acre (350,000 m2) campus was founded in 1961 on the grounds of the former Presque Isle Air Force Base. The first class entered the college in 1963, since then there are over 7000 graduates meeting the needs of employers throughout the state. Annually, there are around 2000 students that attend a variety of the over 30 programs Northern Maine Community College has to offers. NMCC really prides themselves on level of commitment by the 48 full-time instructors. With a student-teacher ratio of 1:15, students can obtain that personal attention that other colleges may lack. As a small college it provides a close-knit learning community, along with the ability to accommodate a wide range of learning styles. NMCC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. Ninety percent of the graduates at Northern Maine community college find jobs within six months of graduating, or they go on to continue their education for a bachelor's degree. There are a fairly even number of male and female students, with more men attending full-time and more women attending part-time. Students range from 13 to 65 and the average age is 26.

Academics

The college awards the Associate's degree in a variety of subject matters. The college is split into four departments: Arts & Sciences, Business Technology,Nursing & Allied Health, Trade & Technical.

Arts & Sciences

This department has programs in Liberal Studies and Early Childhood Education. These programs provide the student with a quality education that allows for growth in critical thinking and communication. The courses are designed to broaden the educational background of the student to make it easier to adapt to change appropriately, along with meeting the needs of business, industry and community. The department emphasizes strong moral values and lifelong learning.

Business Technology

This department is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). This department has programs in Accounting Information Systems,Business Administration, General Technology, Medical Coding, Medical Office Administration, and Office Assistant. These programs promote occupational competence, social responsibility and personal growth. The courses also prepare the student to further their education by providing credits that can be transferred towards a 4-year college. The classroom utilizes both lecture and laboratory experiences to help students put their work and theories to practice. General education classes are an important part of this department because it helps students keep up to date with the current job market.

Nursing & Allied Health

This department is accredited by the associate degree nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc.. This department has programs in Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, Intermediate EMT, Medical Assisting, and Paramedicine. These programs are supported by general education studies and a number of required classes. The students are able to apply their knowledge in both a laboratory and clinical setting. With help from the faculty, who seek and maintain ongoing development in the health care environment, the students can be provided with a current understanding in the ever-changing field of healthcare.

Trade & Technical

This department has programs in Automotive Collision Repair, Automotive Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting Technology, Computer Electronics, Diesel Hydraulics, Electrical Construction & Maintenance, General Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Plumbing & Heating, Precision Metals Manufacturing, Residential Construction, Welding & Metal Fabrication, Wind Power Technology. The Trade and Technical department has the largest number of students, (269 in 2012-213). This department also requires the largest amount of credits to receive an associate degree. Along with needing the largest amounts of credits, the courses required are more demanding and involve mathematics and physical science. Graduates from this department find that the preparation gives an added flexibility when searching for a career. The programs also offer the hands on approach to teaching students, this allows for an increase in first hand learning and the ability to adapt to new tasks and environments.

Sports

NMCC Falcons are a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) school that compete in the Northern Division of the Yankee Small College Conference. The school competes in golf, soccer, men's and women's basketball, ice hockey, and skiing.

Mission Statement

Northern Maine Community College provides career and transfer programs that lead to associate degrees, diplomas or certificates. The students served have an opportunity to develop as individuals and to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for employment or for transfer to a senior college or university. The college assists in economic and human resource development by offering programs of study, courses or seminars to employed individuals, specialized training to attract business and industry, and various community interest courses or seminars.
